In the summer of 2014, after the shooting of her brother (Richie) in Chicago, Chantel Johnson-Walker moved to North Carolina to make sense of life and support her family for caring for Richie who suffered from brain damage and could no longer walk. One year later, Richie died from complications of the shooting. This sent Chantel into a deep depression and into nature to heal. Richie’s death allowed Chantel to birth a new love: farming. Chantel is passionate about helping lead people back to enjoying simple ways of living while reconnecting with their inner spirit. Chantel’s passions are effectuated everyday. As a human, wife, mother, social worker, and farmer in North Carolina, she is able to teach and show people how to follow their dreams, reconnect with nature, and prioritize their mental health. In today’s day and age that’s just what the soul needs.

Her visions are continually growing and she hopes to help nurture the visions of others and her larger community with her teachings and ever-expanding knowledge.

After his military career came to a close Antwon Walker (Farmer Twon) moved to Pensacola Florida and very shortly after to Ocala Florida where he earned his Associates degree from College of Central Florida and then his Bachelors and Masters degrees both from Saint Leo University. Farmer Twon found his love for gardening in 2010 while living in Ocala, Florida. His love for gardening started as a hobby but would later become one of his greatest passions. However, as a result of moving to Indiana in 2014 his love for gardening had to take a back seat. But a goal was set. To move back to Florida and jump start his love for gardening.

In 2017 Farmer Twon moved back to Florida to relive his dream. Shortly after, while visiting North Carolina Farmer Twon would meet his future wife Chantel Johnson. They would eventually decide to combine there farms (Off Grid In Color/House of Timbuktu) and move to North Carolina to build a family farm which today is Sunrising Farms.

Our mission

To lead others to greater self-sufficiency through farm raised food, education and community engagement.

The Farm

The farm is the foundation of living and buiding community. It is a way to connect with nature, heal the mind, and a source of wisdom. The farm is a way to provide for oneself and others. It’s security and a personal utopia. It’s the innermost desires actualized in practice. It’s the world we all live in reimagined and simplified, keeping only the best parts and using borrowed practices from a number of different healthier, freer, and greener ways to live.
